FREE Regular Salsa Lessons with Social Circle

September 30, 2011

Salsa dancing during recent years has become a more popular hobby for many people across the world and Salsa appeals to those of all ages!

During the course of our time building Social Circle into the popular, lifestyle brand it is today we are constantly looking for new ideas and responding to requested activities from our members and when we came to offering Salsa Dancing on our regular monthly calendar this was no exception.

We provide Salsa Dancing classes in Didsbury and these are held on a weekly basis due to their popularity with our members, which mean four FREE Salsa Classes per calendar month!

The actual name “Salsa” is a terminology which quite rightly describes the flavour of this type of Latin dance (hot!)  When Salsa is danced correctly it can be quite a powerful movement which concentrates quite superficially on hip movement.

Conquering the basic Salsa steps often takes less than 10 minute; however, mastering them to music and incorporating different Salsa styles and Salsa characters (of which there are many) can take much longer.  For expert Salsa dancers it is the ‘Cuban Motion’ which plays a large part of Salsa dancing and this should be mastered firstly if the individual is to be successful in this dance genre.

Salsa’s basic steps are believed to have derived initially from the Rumba (commonly referred to as grandfather of Latin dances). Originating from Cuba the Rumba was brought to the United States of America during the early part of the 19th century where it took firmer root in New York City and in particularly in the Latin Quarter of the state.

Our regular Salsa lessons are FUN and FREE to members so why not check them out and book now for October:

Christmas Parties in Manchester

September 27, 2011

Christmas in Manchester is only a close second to Christmas celebrations in London when it comes to the popularity of group parties during the festive season.

Central Manchester is now even more poignant during December with the now-annual Christmas markets which provide open-air festive atmosphere with hot drinks, traditional Christmas gifts, festive music and fresh hot snacks.  Christmas celebrations spread widely across the inner-streets and all the way to the Town Hall steps in Central Manchester in the lead-up to the December holidays.

Generally speaking, there is always a Christmas office party or a Christmas party with friends to be enjoyed somewhere but on occasion the annual office party is not an option because a person maybe self-employed or even on secondment.

Social Circle in South Manchester has been working very hard this year to bring the best-ever Christmas ball to its’ packed annual sports and social calendar.  This year it is not only members who are invited but non members too so anyone can book and join the fun and excitement with a great group of genuinely nice friendly, fun-loving people.

On 10th December the annual Social Circle Christmas party will be taking place at the 4 star Renaissance Hotel in the heart of Manchester City Centre on Blackfriars Street.

This year Social Circle friends and members will enjoy absolute luxury with a mixture of office parties celebrating on the same evening. The Social Circle Christmas celebrations this year means a ‘Christmas Black Tie Ball’ of ultimate fun.

The Christmas Black Tie Ball will be one of the biggest highlights of your year; a fabulous 3 course meal, disco and fully licensed bar and a night of decadent partying.

At the beginning of the evening meet new friends at the drinks reception within the Renaissance banqueting suite followed by a mouth-watering meal and dancing till the early hours of the morning by booking now (places limited)!!

Halloween Parties in South Manchester

September 26, 2011

Halloween parties, dressing up and Trick or Treating is only a few of the many ways we celebrate Hallows Eve on 31st October although when it comes to seasonal celebrations Halloween in the UK is a ‘lesser’ celebrated occasion than celebrations which take place in the USA.

Halloween origins are thousands of years old and date back as far as the 2000 year old Celtic festival of Samhain where it is though it was first celebrated in the country’s; UK, Ireland and the northern regions of France. The original date Halloween was celebrated was 1st November and it was the day that marked the end of summer and the beginning of harvest.

During the transition night between summer and harvest the Celts believed that the boundaries blurred between the worlds of the dead and living and the evening of 31st October became the highly celebrated Samhain. On Samhain it was believed ghosts returned to the earthly plane and caused trouble amongst the living such as damaging crops.

In later years Halloween celebrations was marked by the Druids who built large sacred bonfires; people would gathered around the bonfire sacrifice animals in sacred sacrifices to Celtic deities.

In A.D. 43, the Romans conquered most of the original Celtic territory and over the 400 years that the land remained their habitat their 2 original festivals were combined with the Samhain Celtic festival.

Christianity spread to the ancient homelands of the Celts by 800 and the 7th Century saw Pope Boniface IV officially designate 1st November as ‘All Saints’ Day’ (or All-hallows) where people honoured saints and martyrs which changed the reference to the night before now ‘All-hallows eve.’

In the 18th Century as European immigrants began to travel further the Halloween Festival spread throughout the USA.

Halloween has always been an occasion filled with superstition, mystery and magic from friendly spirits (where treats are given on doorsteps) to today’s Halloween ghosts and parties.

Make Halloween a special day in your diary and come and enjoy the Halloween Monster Mingle party with Social Circle by booking here with a fully licensed and cheap bar, a ghostly disco, free Halloween punch (alcohol) and enjoy snacks and chocolates, karaoke, prize give-aways and lots of new friends in South Manchester.

Whatever Happened to Work-Lfe Balance?

September 23, 2011

Judging by recent statistics, professionals in the UK seem to be neglecting more and more, the work-life balance. But why is this so? And what does this mean?

The fact is that working is becoming even more necessary due to the economy. There has been added pressure on workers to put in more hours behind the desk. There is also an expectancy on employees to never be too far away from a smartphone. This is seen as a symptom, or a cross to bear, for the new lifestyle which, on the surface, promotes autonomy but in reality, at least in part, has the opposite effect.

Work, of course, has always had money as a huge objective and the only objective for many. But even those who previously saw the purpose of their job as a prime motivation have now been forced to see income survival as a bigger aim. Professional and personal lives have begun to merge and it is harder to balance the two when they are one and the same.

But does working extra hours guarantee production? Does that really keep you motivated? Certainly you will get more done if you motivated by high energy and have something to look forward to every now and then. And I don’t mean retirement or a pension but something a little bit more short-term.

Social Circle provides the perfect remedy as it is an opportunity to keep your life as flexible as possible. You don’t need to fit in the social dates your friends have set with your busy and hectic lifestyle. You can pop in and out of our social calendar as often as you would like. And you have the added benefit of having a diverse range of events to choose from rather than being limited to the activities your friends choose. Further, if you feel like engaging something more active and challenging, there are plenty of events to suit.

Live Music @ Matt and Phreds

September 23, 2011

Matt and Phreds offers a relief to the typical bar, club and restaurant scene in Manchester city centre. It is a jazz club which attracts a loyal following of jazz and blues enthusiasts. It features live music from both local and national talent.

In fact, live music plays from every Monday to Saturday and you don’t have to enjoy the music without something nto nibble on as it is also famous for its fine pizza. It is best if you reserve a table and enjoy the pizza with some cocktails. All in all, a great night out!

You are sure to leave Matt and Phreds, having enjoyed a great night out and one that you will want to tell your friends to. The small size of the venue make for a peronal gig which is why many of the acts are local. The prices are frinedly too for a club and overall, there is nothing bad to say about this venue.

The building is large which means those that wish to have a natter can do so by the door without annoying those who wish to purely listen to the music. If you really wish to be at one with the music, you can head towards the stage and revel in the fine acoustics that complement some of the fine acts upon the stage. It creates a great mood and atmosphere. You’ll feel right at home in your threads as you do in your loose jumper and jeans.

Come along and enjoy some live jazz with Social Circle. Jazz is a genre of music you can enjoy on your own but it is a more enjoyable experience when with others who also appreciate the genre. So do so in some like-minded company with quality pizza and one or two from a selection of cocktails.

Quizimido @ Oddest

September 21, 2011

Showing off your general knowledge and having fun at the same time is always a great way to spend time. Quizimido is even Odder than most other pub quizzes so fun is guaranteed! Feel free to come along every Wednesday to have fun galore and pit your wits, along with the wits of your fellow contestants among the other teams in the room.

Oddest is just as it sounds, exceptionally strange. There are cassettes all over the wall, a woman that flies, art from both local and international artists on display, a huge birdcage, Turkish lights and a totally cool jukebox. Yes, this is not just a place that popped up in your craziest of dreams, it actually exists.

The venue continues the tradition of its equally strange elder brothers, Odd and Odder. It sees all sorts of people walk through its doors. There is some great space to do a little work or study with fee WIFI and the food is vegetarian/vegan friendly for the socially conscious. There is also a great childrens menu were the kids can sit and draw on the napkin whilst they wait for their food.

At night, it is a super cool place to chill out and relax with your friends or dance the night away. Weekends are popular too with Over The Hill on Fridays as John Stammers send both your brain and feet a little crazy. You can expect to hear anything from wild exotic country cussers to Beatles-style experimentation. Saturday sees some fine entertainment from some of the very best DJs around so be prepared to look your funkiest.

So come along and join in the fun with a social, and hopefully knowledgeable, team. Enjoy a fun quiz in an exceptionally strange environment and feast on the surroundings that just may leave your head spinning.

Manchester Ghost Walk

September 20, 2011

Manchester has various walks such as Discover Manchester, Manchester Music Walk and the new Media Cities walk. You could walk until the end of eternity exploring the history and culture of Manchester. But one walk which really stands out is Manchester Ghost Walk. Here is your chance ti discover the sinister secrets hiding behind Manchester’s spooky city centre.

You will be guided by Flecky Bennett, who will take you around the back streets into the passageways of the city where ghosts are all around you. Be prepared to experience something very different. And as the nights are getting darker, this is the perfect time of year to see the ghouls, ghosts and goblins which will haunt you for the rest of your lives.

In reality, Flecky Bennett isn’t a tour guide at all. He is an actor providing some first-class entertainment using the backgrounds of the tour as his stage. This makes it more of an attraction or experience than your typical walking tour. He is a member of Equity and he proves it with a magnificent performance. The dialogue with the attendees of the tour and some being used as assistants show the resourceful used. His appearance, which is far from pristine, adds to the performance and the fun but mostly, it is his strong, sounding voice which keeps you alert to any ghostly dangers. Props such as an umbrella and sword all add to the dramatic effects.

The alleys and back lanes walked through on this tour further add to the effect and give the impression that anything could be about to happen. This is especially true of the courtyard of the Town Hall.

So book your place with Social Circle and make some new friends along the way…you will need to! If you live to tell the tale, you could always tell it with a drink in your hand at one of the many Manchester bars in the city centre.
